Research Station: Data-Packed Bird Backpacks

Produced, directed, edited and written by Liz Sung Productions, LLC for University of Michigan Museum of Natural History.

U-M Associate Professor Ben Winger and his team want to know more about migratory routes and how they affect birds’ life cycles, ecology, and evolution. They use tiny geolocation backpacks to track where birds go over the course of a year, then download the data when the bird returns to the original location the next summer. Studying individual birds’ migrations helps them understand where species are found at different times of year, which is important for improving their conservation. Full virtual series can be viewed here

In the field, researchers must catch birds before they can collect data. Matt Hack, PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Michigan, leads the field team at the University of Michigan Biological Station.

Using standard techniques in ornithology that are safe for the birds, the deployment process includes tagging the bird, recording the data, attaching the geolocator device, releasing the bird and hopefully, finding it again next year.
